Everyman, I will go with thee, and be thy guide,
In thy most need to go by thy side
JANE AUSTEN, daughter of a clergyman,
born in 1775 at Steventon, near Basingstoke.
Moved to Bath, 1801; Southampton, 1807; and
a little later to Chawton, near Alton. Died at
Winchester in July 1817.
The text followed in this edition is that of the third
edition (1817) revised by the writer herself, and contains
her latest corrections. In the few cases where an
obvious mistake had been made, or where an essential
word had been inadvertently omitted, it has been
rectified by R. Brimley Johnson.
