You don't need visual aids, you need to pay your lbriary fines and crack a book. I would suggest the volumes in The Oxford History of the United States especially Gordon Wood on the period 1789-1815. The Founders apart from Madison and Jefferson during this period wanted what was in terms of that time a big government. They were Federalists who wanted to protect the people against the states. And even Madison and Jefferson agreed once in power. In the 1790s they feared Alien and Sedition but then took the country into war with Britain despite the fact that half the country disagreed with the war.Nobody minds  big government  as long as it does what they want not even Ron Paul. Reagan came closer to nuclear war than Kennedy and created the first of a series of REPUBLICAN deficits. The question is not whether government is big it is who it serves.
